Stewart Wilson is a UK Midlands based artist specialising in dramatic urban forms influenced by unusual or extreme lighting.

I work heavily in oils and my work often approaches impasto style, depth and intensity. I favour palette knives and fingers to gain the required texture and depth. In a world saturated with prints I often smile to myself whilst working, catching a glimpse of finger marks in the thick luscious paint.

I’m a Nottinghamshire based artist who predominantly works within the medium of paint. I’ve just recently graduated from a Fine Art degree at De Montfort University in Leicester.

My work deals with space and atmosphere. I create illusionary three dimensional spaces within the confines of a two dimensional canvas. The paintings offer contrasts, in terms of what the viewer sees and feels. The work plays on the viewer and creates a struggle as to what they consider to be actual space. The audience is made to feel like they could step inside the void but at the same time they are repressed by an unknown aspect of the painting. Offering an organic contradiction throughout all aspects of the paintings makeup.

In the centre is the image.
On its surface, the result of the process.
In its heart, the essence of the idea.

My work revolves around image based media: photography, film and video, digital art, installation, projections, printmaking.

In broad terms, there are two main veins of my artistic work: (1) the so-called ‘straight forward photography’ (which unfolds into the commercial domain and fine art and which also includes film making) and (2) research based site-specific projects.

These categories as one would expect are not so clear-cut, however each is defined by very particular processes.

From my beginnings in the performing arts and a career in dance, I have always been fascinated with movement, flow and pattern. My ceramics and glass reflect this by combining the figurative with texture and abstract design. I experiment with colour, glazes, oxides and enamels using multiple firings to create highly textured surfaces. Taking inspiration from the movement of nature, the sea, water, and the flow of landscapes, I create organic shapes and designs to build one-off pieces.
